Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a library card?

Getting a library card is free and easy! Visit any City of Matlosana library branch with:

  • A valid South African ID or passport
  • Proof of residence (utility bill, lease agreement, or affidavit not older than 3 months)
  • For children under 16: Birth certificate and parent/guardian's ID

Your library card will be issued immediately and is valid at all our branches. There are no fees for membership, and you can start borrowing books right away. You can borrow up to 6 items for a period of 3 weeks, with the option to renew if no one else has reserved the item.

What are the loan periods and can I renew books?

Standard loan periods are:

  • Books: 3 weeks (21 days)
  • Magazines: 1 week (7 days)
  • Reference materials: Library use only, no borrowing

You can renew items up to 2 times if no one else has reserved them. Renewals can be done:

  • In person at any library branch
  • By phone: Call your branch directly
  • By email: Send your library card number and book titles to your branch email

Late returns incur a fine of R2.00 per item per day. Please return or renew items on time to avoid fines and ensure everyone has access to library materials.

Do you have computers and internet access?

Yes! All our library branches offer free computer and internet access to library card holders. Our computer facilities include:

  • Desktop computers with internet access
  • Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Printing services (small fee applies: R1.00 per black & white page, R3.00 per color page)
  • Scanning and photocopying services
  • Free WiFi throughout the library

Computer sessions are limited to 1 hour when others are waiting, but you can book additional time if computers are available. We also offer free computer training classes - check with your local branch for the schedule.

What programs do you offer for children?

We offer a variety of engaging programs designed to inspire young readers:

  • Story Time: Every Wednesday at 10:00 AM for ages 3-7. Interactive storytelling with activities
  • Reading Clubs: After-school reading programs for different age groups
  • Holiday Programs: Fun educational activities during school holidays
  • Homework Help: After-school assistance with assignments

All children's programs are free and designed to support literacy development while making reading fun. Parents are welcome to stay for Story Time sessions. Check with your local branch for specific program schedules and to register your child.

Can I donate books to the library?

Yes, we gratefully accept book donations! Your donations help us expand our collection and serve the community better. We accept:

  • Fiction and non-fiction books in good condition
  • Children's books and educational materials
  • Reference books and textbooks (recent editions)
  • Magazines published within the last year

Please note that we cannot accept:

  • Damaged, moldy, or water-damaged books
  • Outdated reference materials
  • Books with missing pages or excessive highlighting
  • Encyclopedias (unless very recent)

Donations can be dropped off at any branch during operating hours. Library staff will evaluate donations and add suitable items to our collection. Items not added may be offered at book sales to raise funds for library programs. Thank you for supporting your community library!
